Week One of the December Beginner’s Yoga Challenge

This December, I made a commitment to yoga with the 2015 Beginner’s Yoga Challenge. This challenge is hosted by 2 professional yogis – BEACHYOGAGIRL and KINOYOGA – and one host/sponsor – MANTRAYOGA. As the name suggests, this is a yoga challenge for beginners. I have been working on the basic asanas in hopes of being able to further my practice in 2016. Every day a new pose.

This photo outlines the poses that I will practice every day from december 1 – 24, and following are my attempts along with notes of what I have learned thus far.

 

 

 

DAY 1️⃣ of #beginneryoga2015

Downward Facing Dog / Adho Mukha Svanasana

Strengthens the upper body, arms, shoulders, chest and legs. 

Stretches chest, shoulders.

Stretches the whole back of the body, ankles, calves, hamstrings, spine.

Calms the mind.

Overall energizes the body. Stimulates blood circulation.

DAY 2️⃣ of #BeginnerYoga2015

Chaturanga Dandasana

Strengthens arms, shoulder and leg muscles.

Develops core stability.

Prepared body for inversions and arm balances

DAY 3️⃣ of #BeginnerYoga2015

Warrior II / Virabhadrasana II

Strengthens and stretches the legs and ankles.

Stretches the groins, chest and lungs, shoulders.

Stimulates abdominal organs.

Increases stamina.

Relieves backaches, especially through second trimester of pregnancy.

Therapeutic for carpal tunnel syndrome, flat feet, infertility, osteoporosis, and sciatica.

Half Moon Pose / Ardha Chandrasana

Strengthens the abdomen, ankles, thighs, buttocks, and spine.

Stretches the groins, hamstrings and calves, shoulders, chest, and spine.

Improves coordination and sense of balance

Strengthens thighs, calves, ankles, and spine.

Stretches the groins and inner thighs, chest and shoulders.

Improves sense of balance.

Relieves sciatica and reduces flat feet.

Stretches the shoulders and chest.

Stretches the thighs, groins, and abdomen.

Strengthens the legs and ankles.
