in january of 2015 i decided to launch a blog. i did so with a brief post, and some photos of the destination that inspired me to finally go live – Lake Tahoe. in the past year my blog has molded into a healthy living blog that encourages others to be active, to be outside, and to be themselves. in celebrating the one year anniversary of thefirst2hours, i thought i would share some of my favorite posts from 2015.
great news, thefirst2hours has finally linked up with bloglovin! You can follow my blog with Bloglovin by clicking here. and to celebrate this new community, i thought i would share a visual history of some of the goodies that have been featured on thefirst2hours in days past.
generally when you hear of a destination wedding, you hear about sandy beaches and bathing suits. joe and i chose a different route. our wedding destination of choice was Alaska, and i traded in my bathing suit for my Patagonia Piolet Jacket. we had two weeks to adventure through this outdoors(wo)man’s dream state, and one of the highlights was a full day kayaking trip through the Kenai Fjords.
who we choose to surround ourselves with, greatly influences our lives. parents push children to hang out in the right crowds. those in the religious community continually preach fellowship. in our professional lives, we seek mentors that show us how we can reach higher. in nearly ever facet of life, we are told to surround ourselves with positive people who encourage us to be better; yet for some reason, we rarely talk about surrounding our selves with an environment that encourages positivity. i would argue that is it more than the who in our surroundings that influences us, but also the what.
this past weekend my surroundings undoubtedly made me a better person as i adventured through Vashon Island with some of the best people i know – my parents and a dear friend who’s spirit is infectious. Read More »
every year i spend time in Colorado for work. often times my work trips are spent in cities, but on this particular occasion, i knew i had meetings in Estes Park, Colorado. the thought had me squirming with enthusiasm. it was a work trip, and a busy one at that, but when life gives you lemons, you wake up at 4am, drive 45 minutes to meet Mr J and his pup at the trailhead, and squeeze in a 10 mile hike before the work day begins.
as i have been working my way back into levels of comfort as a yogi, i have been practicing various poses at home. each morning generally begins with a yoga stretching session in the living room. apparently my pups have been eager to participate as well; and now, at week end, they both join me each morning for some yoga.
last weekend my volleyball partner and i kicked off beach volleyball season 2015 at alki beach with an exciting day and a second place finish. (read all about our exciting tournament and view the pro event photos, here). the day after our tournament, we had a flight leaving seattle at noon. it would have been easy to sleep in and let our overworked muscles have the rest they deserved; but bodies like ours aren’t very good at resting. instead, we woke ourselves up early, and headed out to find some green in thefirst2hours. there is no better way to combat sore muscles, than with movement. and we opted to move!
naturally we wanted to move in a beautiful place but our time was limited; so after consulting the google machine, we set our sights on cougar mountain regional wildland park.
this past weekend marked the beginning of beach volleyball season 2015 for my partner and i. we kicked it off with a trip to seattle, a tournament at alki beach, and an undefeated record leading up to the finals match.
it was the first time either of us had competed at alki beach so we weren’t quite sure what to expect out of the competition, the beach itself, or the people. needless to say, everything and everyone surpassed our expectations and we can’t wait to get back!
recently, i was asked about the meaning of my blog name, and i thought i would reiterate that answer here, as it is relevant to this post:
“thefirst2hours, are the favorite two hours of my days. i love stepping outside before the sun rises, and being surrounded by silence. those moments of solitude are the most beautiful moments i know, and they are precious to my being.
thefirst2hours are also the most important two hours of my days. life in this day and age is busy, and it has become far too easy to compromise our health for all of our obligations. but ultimately, it is our decision to make. it is within those first2hours, that i vow i will wake up early, get outside, raise my heart rate, see the world, and not waste those precious moments. i choose to make myself a priority.”
