i have recently gone through the 5 stages of loss and grief. what did i lose, you ask? my young joints and invincibility. i have kicked and screamed my way through each stage to finally come to accept my new physical self. i had to get back to that place where activity solved all of my problems, where all of the weight was taken off my shoulders, where i could let go and do something for myself and myself alone. and i have arrived. i have learned to embrace my new physical self that is a result of years of (what many would call) abuse; but i now choose to refer to as, a happy life. in january of 2015 i decided to launch a blog. i did so with a brief post, and some photos of the destination that inspired me to finally go live – Lake Tahoe. in the past year my blog has molded into a healthy living blog that encourages others to be active, to be outside, and to be themselves. in celebrating the one year anniversary of thefirst2hours, i thought i would share some of my favorite posts from 2015.
they say that the most difficult part of any journey, is taking the first steps. that is indisputably the case when it comes to getting in shape physically. when we feel good about ourselves and our bodies, it is easy to work out. however, when we are out of shape and uncomfortable in our own skin, it’s difficult to face up to the discomfort of those first few workouts. it is going to hurt. but the important thing to remember is that the pain is temporary, and it is going to be worth it.
this past weekend marked the beginning of beach volleyball season 2015 for my partner and i. we kicked it off with a trip to seattle, a tournament at alki beach, and an undefeated record leading up to the finals match.
it was the first time either of us had competed at alki beach so we weren’t quite sure what to expect out of the competition, the beach itself, or the people. needless to say, everything and everyone surpassed our expectations and we can’t wait to get back!
i love the month of may. flowers are blooming. the sun is shining. and outdoor activities are on everyone’s mind. this year’s may has been even more exciting with big news in the boise area – we have weekly fun runs!
i recently discovered that the treasure valley is getting a new local running / fitness store, and i am stoked! Fleet Feet Sports is due to open it’s doors in The Village at Meridian this july; but because local owners Brandon and Kimberly Frank are so excited to get involved in the community now, they have decided to bring us fun runs a few months early! woohoo!
beach volleyball season, my favorite time of year. and this year, i kicked the season off with a queen of the beach tournament in salt lake city. the good people at wasatch beach volleyball host tournaments from may – september at their fantastic facility. this week was particularly spectacular as it was a sunny 75 degrees, but the wasatch mountain peaks in the backdrop were still covered in snow. it was the perfect day for a tournament.
this morning, the alarm startled me awake at 5:30am. i proceeded to have this conversation with myself: what time is it? is that my alarm? is that joe’s alarm? where am i? am i at home?
